Technology

How does extrusion improve absorption?

Extrusion technology helps increase nutrient availability and improves the digestibility of flaxseed in the ruminant diet.

Raw flaxseed

Extrusion 110–130°C

More efficient feed utilisation

Greater energy availability

Thermal processing improves fat availability and energy value for productive animals.

Better digestibility

Extrusion helps break down the seed structure and improves nutrient absorption.

Greater safety and stability

The extrusion process helps reduce microbiological risk and stabilise product quality.

Extrusion also helps reduce some antinutritional factors and improves the use of flaxseed in animal husbandry.

WHY IT WORKS

Scientific evidence, not promises.

The data presented comes from independent scientific research on the extruded flaxseed product class. Ekstrumix L70/OP30 belongs to this product class.

Increased milk yield

A group of French researchers led by Meignan et al. analyzed data from 158,125 dairy cows across 1,096 farms using eight years of milk recording and artificial insemination system data. The study identified a statistically significant dose–response relationship: milk yield increased from +0.59 L/day at lower doses to +1.13 L/day when 300–600 g of extruded flaxseed per day was used. These are large-scale field data from European farms reflecting real-world production conditions.

Reproduction

In one of the most cited studies in this field (Ambrose et al., Journal of Dairy Science, 2006), 121 Holstein cows were analyzed and divided into two groups before insemination. One group received extruded flaxseed, while the other received sunflower seed supplementation. In the flaxseed group, pregnancy loss was nearly three times lower — 9.8% compared to 27.3% in the control group. Conception rate after the first insemination increased from 47.5% to 72.6%, and ovulatory follicle size was larger. Milk from cows fed extruded flaxseed showed a 187% increase in ALA content. Although the study sample was not large, the contrast in results was both statistically and practically significant.

Milk quality

Improvement of the milk fatty acid profile is one of the most consistently confirmed effects of extruded flaxseed. Studies show that including it in the diet helps reduce saturated fatty acid content and significantly increases Omega-3 concentration in milk.

In a study conducted by Oregon State University (Bobe et al., Journal of Dairy Science, 2013), the Omega-3 content in milk increased by approximately 70%, while later studies demonstrated even more pronounced results and a more favorable Omega-6 to Omega-3 ratio.

Such changes are particularly important for farms focused on producing higher value-added milk and premium quality dairy programs.
